High intensity focused ultrasound

High-intensity focused ultrasound technology is referred to as HIFU technology in English. The ultrasound is focused on the target tissue, and the ultrasound generated in vitro is focused on the diseased tissue (the therapeutic target) in the living body by using the tissue penetration and energy deposition of the ultrasound. The purpose of treating diseases is achieved by the mechanical, thermal and cavitation effects of ultrasound. Its mode of action is similar to the principle that the sunlight is focused by the magnifying glass and causes the paper placed at the focus to burn.



The energy of the focused ultrasound at the non-treated site through which it is directed is not sufficient to cause damage to the tissue. At its focus point, due to the high sound intensity, the temperature of the tissue is instantaneously raised to 60-100 °C by the thermal effect of ultrasound. This results in protein denaturation and irreversible coagulative necrosis of tissue cells. At the same time, the cavitation effect of ultrasound causes interstitial fluid, intercellular fluid and intracellular gas molecules to form bubbles under the action of ultrasonic positive and negative pressure phases. It then shrinks and expands to eventually blast, and the energy produced causes cell damage and necrosis. The shape and size of the focused ultrasound focal region and the effects of tissue on ultrasound and its counteraction play a decisive role in the depth of ultrasound treatment, the extent of tissue damage and the degree of injury. Therefore, by setting the parameters of the ultrasonic transducer, the purpose of targeting the lesion can be achieved, and the tissue surrounding the treatment target is not damaged, thereby achieving the goal of non-invasive treatment.



The difference between high intensity focused ultrasound and ultrasound hyperthermia:

The high-intensity focused ultrasound focusing area can be raised to above 60 °C, directly coagulation of cellular proteins, and the purpose of ablation of cells. Can be used as a direct treatment, in principle, only one treatment.

Ultrasound hyperthermia is completely different, the temperature of the ultrasound action zone is generally 40-45 ° C, can not directly cause coagulative necrosis of cell tissue, can only make it degeneration, can be used as an auxiliary treatment, generally need to be repeated.
